In years gone by, goats were kept by virtually each and every farming household in Mallorca. The animal was kept for milk, cheese making and for the meat. Nowadays, the consumption of goat meat has widely gone out of fashion. It is rare to see a herd of goats any more. In the mountain range of the Serra de Tramuntana it is sometimes possible to see small herds of wild goats. I like the taste of a roast goat. The meat is tender if the goat is a kid. The meat is by and large free from chemical substances and has a low fat content. Some restaurants still serve Cabrito (in Orient for instance, and in Lluc). Occasionally, we buy a goat and share the meat between friends. The farmer selects the kid and sells us the cuts ready for the oven.
Goats From a Small Island is also the title of a book by Anna Nicholas, a resident here but, hailing from the UK. The book makes for a pleasant read.
