Majorca is located in the Mediterranean, not far off the coast of Spain and is one of the small group of Spanish Balearic Islands. The island has been inhabited since 6000BC. The Romans occupied it for several hundred years, as did the Moors from North Africa. Then eventually, it was reclaimed by the Catholic, Spanish monarchy. This ancient, varied and intermixed culture gives the island a great deal of character, both in terms of its buildings and architecture, and also in the easygoing, laidback attitudes of its people.
Much of the ancient history of the island can be found in the buildings, and museums of the capital, Palma. The Bellver castle is a wonderful sight to behold, especially after dark, when it is bathed in pastel floodlights. The Pueblo Espanol, is a museum, which is a small village with facsimile versions of great classical Spanish buildings. More Majorca information on historical sites is available through the local tourist office.
This is not to say that the city is by any means stuck in the past. This is also a young and vibrant city. With a progressive culture and a large population of younger people, there are many nightspots and entertainment possibilities from traditional music to dance and rock concerts by major artists.
Since the first stirrings of mass tourism over fifty years ago, Majorca has blossomed into a tourist paradise. The development of the island for tourism has been methodical and very much controlled by the local authorities. This has paid dividends for the local economy and for visitors alike. Nearly all of the gaudy, and run down hotels and resorts built in the sixties and seventies have been forcibly demolished to make way for modern, four and five star resorts and hotels, making Majorca an upmarket getaway location.
There has also been massive infrastructure development all over the island. Checking through official Majorca information from government sources, you see that there are now three times the number of kilometres of roads on the island than there were in the seventies.
And there has also been massive investment from the private sector with several large, high end marina resorts dotted around the island. Not to mention the numerous golf courses built by the big names in the golfing world. For example the Jack Nicklaus designed, Park Puntiro golf club.
Further large scale development of shopping, restaurant and entertainment centers has further fuelled Majorca's upscale image. All of this has brought in the a list celebrities, with names such as Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas, Claudia Schiffer, Annie Lennox, and many others, now calling Majorca home.
