Could Magalluf be set for a name change?

Magalluf name change?

Palma.—Over the next few years, over 300 million euros of private investment, the bulk of it by the Meliá Hotels International group, is going to be ploughed into giving Magalluf a major facelift and this has sparked talk of a possible new name for the resort.

Meliá International’s “Sol Calvia Resort”, which has already been unveiled, will comprise six of the chain’s hotels in the resorts and all are going to be totally reformed and fitted with the very latest attractions such as wave machines, penthouse apartments and vast commercial centres.

The global Majorcan chain aims to breathe some new and quality life into the resort which has been a hugely popular destination since the 60s, but since then has enjoyed little reinvestment.

Four and five star

Elsewhere, a new four hotel and commercial complex is going to be built on the ground opposite Pirates and work is due to start as soon as possible with the local council doing all it can to get the project off the ground with minimum delay.

However, the problem is that for decades now, Magalluf has earned itself an image which probably will not sit comfortably with its new four to five star resorts and complexes and that is one of the reasons talk is rife in Calvia about changing the resort’s infamous name.

Apparently the idea of a name change was mooted at a recent meeting of Calvia Council.

Although nothing has been decided and the proposal may never get off the ground for administrational reasons, one name which has been mentioned is Nova Calvia and it appears that changing Magalluf’s name has widespread support throughout the local residential and commercial communities who are all too well aware of the image which comes attached to Magalluf nowadays.

Fresh start

With the millions of euros being invested into the resort, the local community is looking forward to a fresh start which will enable them to clean up the resort’s act and reestablish itself as one of Europe’s most popular summer holiday resorts – but for all the right reasons.
