Soller train set to honour 100 year
The celebrations begin this Friday, March 9, when a special exhibition dedicated to the 100 years of the train opens in the Can Prunera museum.The exhibition The Soller Railway, 100 years of travel 1912-2012 will be the first of the celebratory events and will feature an extensive collection of documents, photographs and paintings from the railway’s own archives as well as a number of items, such as old uniforms etc. from private collections.PhotographsSome of the photographs chart the complicated construction of the railway under the guidance of Jeroni Estades and its eventual inauguration in April 1912.The exhibition will also include certain items which have been stored in the railway yards for the past century such as ancient pieces of machinery, old tickets, the various station bells, whistles and other items which have all played a vital part in the smooth running of the railway for the past 100 years.The original plans for the construction of the various bridges, tunnels and viaducts will also be on display in this retrospective exhibition which has been commissioned by Antonia Maria Miró.CompetitionsOver the coming days the Soller railway will announce the calendar of events such as painting and photographic competitions which are going to be held to mark this historic occasion.The dawn of the Soller railway dramatically changed and improved the life of the population in the Valley of Soller for they finally had a quick and easy link to Palma and, since then, it has gone on to become the island’s most popular tourist attraction.
